Not bored today

Today a former co-worker and his wife were traveling through Landstuhl on their way to France. They stopped by and picked me up. We went over to Ramstein for lunch. It was great to see G and D. Reminded me how much fun G can be. G is one of those who knows everyone everwhere. When we went to lunch in San Antonio, he always ran into someone he knew. Nothing changed, while we were at lunch, he ran into people he knew from the AF Personnel office. I really enjoyed spending time with G and D. So today I wasn't bored.

OK, so I was bored

The sun was shining and it looked like everyone in the town was out, so I figured why not me. I did prepare to be cold by taking my hat and gloves as well as wearing my coat. Good thing, it looked warm from inside the apartment, but it wasn’t warm. It was cold and when you got it the wind it was freezing!
I didn’t want to look like a tourist (too much) so I didn’t take my big camera set; I took Tom’s small Sony Cybershot. It takes good photos, but I just can’t zoom in like I can with my camera. Landstrul is a good size village, so I didn’t walk around the entire town, just the area near our temp* apartment. * notice that I keep calling it temp.
The first place I stopped was at the statue of a horse and rider, not sure what it means, but check out the guy in yellow in the lower left corner. He’s the postman. I ran into him a few times during my walk. The sign was in the same location, again, no idea what it means. It does show the towns.

The next stop was at some burned out arches. This looks like some of the damage from WWII, but I could be wrong.

Next to the arch is this odd looking wooden “press”. It’s next to the garbage bins, but I don’t think it was intended to be taken away by the trash man.

Just down from the arch I ran across the Irish Pub. Tom and I’ve been by this a few times, but we never seem to catch it open. Funny hours for a pub.

Next on my walk was the local church. I can hear the church bells from our temp housing. They ring every hour (until about 9pm then they seem to stop until after 6am).

Just down from the church is this building, I think it may be part of the church, but can’t be sure.

As I walked back to the apartment, I came across a couple interesting sites.

Hello Kittie is a big thing here so I took a picture of a window in a flower shop.

Also some photos of the local flower shops.

The last photo is the middle of a main intersection in town. This guy wasn’t there the last time I walked this way. Not sure what it means. But he’s either holding a soccer ball or an American basket ball. You figure it out.

Update from Germany

Being temporarily (I hope) unemployed and since the “cat” moved away, I’m spending a lot of time watching TV. Since we only have 300+ channels, there’s not much to choose from. Seriously, most of the channels are in languages I don’t even recognize. I’ve caught up on a British soap I used to watch (Coronation Street) and watch a lot of news. Also I’ve watched Sponge Bob Square Pants and Strawberry Shortcake in German.
Mostly I’ve been watching the Euro Sports channel. Yes, it’s broadcasted in German, but with most of the sports, I don’t need to understand the broadcaster. I’ve always loved watching Ski jumping and other winter ski sports. I got sort of hooked on watching Ski jumping back when we were in England.
There’s one sport I’m not sure of. I think its speed ice skating, but it looks more like “roller derby” on ice. Weird sport! I’ve watched speed skating before, and it was nothing like this. In any case, it looks like China is winning (I think).

Missy and I have been using Yahoo IM and we can see and hear each other. On Saturday I had Missy call my mother on the phone while I was on IM. I got to talk to Mom. Her voice wasn’t very strong so I had trouble hearing her, but I did get to talk to her! On Sunday, Tommy was over at Missy’s and Tom and I got to talk and hear him. Isn’t the internet a great invention!
Still no good news on the housing front. The house in Texas is still on the market (we are thinking of renting it out), and we haven’t found a house here yet (still waiting to see the inside of the yellow house on the hill).
I did get a phone call from Ramstein AF Personnel about a vacancy, but don’t think I got the job. The selecting official didn’t seem impressed with my recent experience being Personnel Systems, and not hands on recruiting. Oh well, retirement in August is looking like a viable option.
Take care and keep on knitting!

We are going to look at the "Yellow House" next week. It's not available until 15 April, so who knows what we'll do. But I'm bored living in a rental property.
Check out the fortress on the hill. You can see it in the first photo of the side of the house.
